Technical Services Mission Statement
The mission of the Technical Services Department is to support the mission of the Library by adhering to the highest standards of acquiring, organizing and providing bibliographic access to materials by combining quality and accuracy with expeditious delivery of services to all the communities we serve.
The following is a list of areas identified as having the greatest influence on the Technical Services Department's ability to meet this mission and our goals regarding these areas:
- Database - Create, organize, and maintain accurate and comprehensive records for the library's collections in a manner that facilitates patron access to library materials. These records include bibliographic, order, holdings and authority records.
- Cataloging - Acquire, edit and create records according to national standards adjusting for local needs. This also includes ongoing maintenance, quality control and authority control.
- Procedure manuals - Create and maintain up to date, consistent and uniform procedure manuals as well as continue ongoing evaluations of these procedures.
- Technology - Maintain currency in and accommodate new tools and technological resources wisely, creatively, and efficiently.
- Materials - Acquire, prepare, organize, and process information resources in a variety of formats expeditiously, efficiently and economically.
- Acquisitions - Maintain accurate accounting of the Library's expenditures and receipt of materials that is cost effective and timely and which enables quality collection development and curriculum support.
- University community - Create and maintain an atmosphere conducive to harmonious relations with the university community as a whole by providing information and resolving problems quickly and courteously.
- Staff support - Enable staff to take advantage of continuing education, training, interaction with other technical services staff, and regular public service experience in order to be able to utilize everyone's talents and abilities to the fullest extent possible and to be able to offer progressive and helpful service. Create and maintain an affirmative and supportive work environment.
- Library community - Communicate regularly, by both listening and being heard, with personnel in other departments to coordinate activities, participate in decision making and provide expertise in those areas that affect the Technical Services Departments mission and goals.
- Standards - Employ nationally recognized standards, adapted to local needs for bibliographic, holdings and fiscal control records.
