Though some scholars believe otherwise, Chaucer was probably not educated at the Inns of Court. The records begin in 1422, not early enough to indicate Chaucer's involvement, nor does the record show that he paid a fine there. Most likely, the Inns of Court supplied lodging for lawyers who needed to be in town during legal sessions, a function they served well into the fifteenth century.
