To develop keywords, first try writing out your topic into a neutral question. For example, if you are researching standardized testing in high schools, you could write a question like this: “In what ways does standardized testing impact student success in high school?” Next identify the main concepts of your question. In this case, we have: standardized testing, student, success, and high school. Next find synonyms for your key words. Try using a thesaurus online. You can also use a database subject search like the one provided in EBSCO’s Academic Search Premier. Collect your list of keywords and begin searching the databases.
