Holds and Recalls
Placing a hold on a title that is currently available in the library will reserve the item for you. The library staff will also retrieve the item from the shelf and place it at the Kirkland Campus Library front desk for pickup.
Placing a hold on a title that is currently checked out will reserve the item for you when it is returned. The original due date of the item will not change, but the current borrower will not be able to renew it.
Holds will generally be available within 24 hours for items that are not checked out. For items that are currently checked out, holds will generally be available within 24 hours after the item is returned.
When a hold is ready for pickup, an email notification will be sent to your NU email account. Holds will be available for pickup for 7 days.
Note: Salem Campus items cannot be placed on hold. If there is a Salem Campus item that is not also available at the Kirkland Campus Library, please place an Interlibrary Loan request.
If there is an immediate need for a specific item, library staff can place a recall which will require the current borrower to return the item after a shorter loan period. Recalled items must be returned promptly to avoid fines at a higher rate.
NU Students, Faculty, and Staff
Holds may be placed through the library catalog. From the search results page in the library catalog, click on the title of the item you would like to place on hold.
On the next page, scroll down to the “Find a copy in the library” section and click on the Place Hold button.
You will be prompted to log in to your library account. Enter the first part of your NU email address (without the @northwestu.edu) and your NU email password.
After logging in, change the pick-up location to Kirkland Campus and click Submit.
Affiliate Borrowers (NU Alumni, Pastors and Missionaries, AGTS, Community Borrowers)
Affiliate borrowers currently cannot place holds themselves. Please email the library at firstname.lastname@example.org with the titles you would like to place on hold.
You will receive an email notification to the email account we have on file when your hold is ready for pickup.
